The Building Boom
The building boom
This almost perfect climate is one of the main reasons behind the unprecedented building boom, aided by the fact that with modern communications it is increasingly easy for people to work and run companies in northern Europe but from a distance. Relocation therefore becomes a possibility.
During the 1960s the building boom was at the eastern end of the coast while the western end remained relatively unspoiled. This is changing rapidly and, within a few years, the entire coastline will be built-up. The area from Nerja to Gibraltar may eventually be very similar to greater Los Angeles.
The coast is changing but this brings prosperity to the region. It provides jobs for those who live here and necessitates the upgrading of the local infrastructure to cope with a larger population – new roads, more public transport, better shopping facilities, better communication facilities – in fact the infrastructure which is expected in the 21st century.
