Just as the Vikings and then Norwegian emigrants of the 19th century left to settle elsewhere, other peoples have settled in Norway. Up to the late 1960s, their cultural impact on the country was modest, as their numbers were small. But then their numbers grew, in step with increasing flows of immigrants and refugees across Europe. In 1980, there were about 100,000 foreign-born residents in the country, most of them from other Western countries. Since then, the number of foreign-born residents from western countries has increased only slightly, but the numbers from non-Western countries have grown dramatically. Today, three in four of the some 350,000 foreign-born residents in the country are from non-Western countries, the most from Asia and Africa.

Immigrant population (Innvandrerbefolkning)

About one resident in 13 is born in another country or is born of two parents from another country. Since 1980, the number of first- and second-generation Westerners has gone up by about 50%, from 65,000 to slightly less than 100,000 in 2004, whilst the number of first- and second-generation residents from other countries has gone up nearly nine times, from 29,500 in 1980 to a 250,000 in 2004. Citizens of the other Nordic countries comprise the largest group of first-generation foreign-born residents. The Danish, American and British first-generation residents come to stay, as more than half of them have lived in the country more than 20 years. Among the peoples from Asia, the Pakistani lead both in permanence and numbers: four in 10 have lived in the country more than 20 years; together they comprise 7.5% of all first and second generation ethnic foreigners; and 45% of them are born in Norway.
