MY SPECIAL SELECTION
Many thanks to DJ Robyn Bryan who invited me to be her guest on Odstock (Salisbury) Hospital Radio. We enjoyed was a fun hour talking about gardening and playing my choice of songs. Here, in no particular order, is My Special Selection, and why:
I Can See Clearly Now – Jimmy Cliff; Just a wonderfully uplifting song. It makes me think of mate Dave The Main Man, now sadly passed on. He sang this on his guitar after a particularly dangerous and chaotic morning out in the (anti) hunting field, changed the words slightly, and it just struck a chord.
These Are The Days Of Our Lives – Queen; Ever since I saw the Queen video of Crazy Little Thing Called Love on Top Of The Pops I’ve loved this band. I could pick all my songs from the Queen portfolio. What I love about this one is the lyrics. Queen delivered some quite profound songs in their later years. I like listening to the words of a song and this one is just beautiful.
Our House – Crosby, Stills & Nash; I listened to this one a lot as a young man with friends. Again, great words. Through the haze of late-teenage and early-twenties smoke I’d dream that one day I’d have two cats in the yard and life wouldn’t be so hard. I’m getting there but still dreaming.
First Time Ever I Saw Your Face – Roberta Flack; This one is for the long suffering Mrs Nails. It’s a gorgeous love song, and how I feel about her.
Bright Eyes – Art Garfunkel; I’ve always been soft on animals. Watching Watership Down would be compulsory if I was the Prime Minister. I don’t think anyone with a heart can fail to be moved by the plight of the rabbits. A serious story and real tear-jerker. As far as I’m concerned, this song is for all the animals in the world who deserve a better life.
I’ll Be With You In Apple Blossom Time – The Platters; This is the tune which I had running round my head in the weeks and days, then hours, running up to our wedding day, which as it happens is at that time of year in early May. You know how a tune gets stuck in your mind and you end up singing it over and over, constantly? Well, that’s this one.
There were others* but we ran out of time!
*Wish You Were Here – Pink Floyd, The Bad Squire – Chumbawamba, Out On The Weekend – Neil Young.
