Hey! Thanks Joe. That's a great idea. I noticed that I could germinate coriander seed that I bought at a local Asian food store. Much cheaper than a pack of seeds from a garden shop. I also keep spare potatoes and plant them, and my very best potato production this year came from a bag of sprouting Maris Peers that my girl friend was throwing out. I grabbed them as she tried to put them in the bin and cut them in half. I cropped a measured 49 pounds of perfect salad potatoes out of 20 plants in 9 square yards of garden. I was pretty amazed they were the best potatoes I ever grew by far.

I take it the beans were being marketed as 'Field Beans' or did they have some foodie name?

Dear Tony,

Regarding your enquiry about field beans...

I actually got mine in a 1lb bag for 60 pence from Spice of Life Wholefood Shop in Cardiff whilst visiting my step-daughter back along. Way, way cheaper than the offerings from garden centres and in reality no difference in the product. So there's the clue I think - go to a wholefood store and purchase your desired quantity of field beans from them at a snip. The same applies to fenugreek and alfalfa, though I reckon they're better sown in the warmer months than where we are now. Good luck and let me know how you get on.

Hi,

Where can I get a decent sized bag of field bean seed please? The usual gardening people sell tiny amounts and I want about three kg. I contacted Wherrys and the smallest quantity they sell is 50kg - a bit much for an allotment - fine for the farm.

I was hoping they might produce some edibles for my hens by spring - ether greenstuff or maybe protein rich beans.
