Thursday, June 4th, 20094 June 2009 A WORM IN THE LETTUCE Tom Thumb lettuces are ace. They develop soft heads that fit into the palm of your hand. Aside from being ideal in a small garden and deliciously tasty in a sandwich or with dressing to boot, they are pretty straightforward to grow. I started mine on 5 [...]

Wednesday, May 27th, 200927 May 2009 SOME RAIN AT LAST Some rain has fallen at last. To me, crucial; to my plants, essential; to wildlife in general, more than welcome. A barbeque summer of searing heat and wide open blue skies may please deck chair vendors, builders and folk who want to cultivate a tan, but for the [...]

Sunday, April 5th, 20095 April 2009 SHADING SEEDLINGS An old gardener friend called round this afternoon and, in passing, gave me a top tip to employ when germinating seeds in containers either on a greenhouse shelf or window sill. It explains why sometimes we are advised to cover freshly sown pots and trays with sheets of glass and [...]

Saturday, April 4th, 20094 April 2009 AVOIDING PARSNIP CANKER Fellow allotmenteers Heather and Julian have both told me an interesting tip for avoiding parsnip canker. She says sow seeds in May, he says do it in April. Personally, I’ve always got my parsnips in the ground earlier than that. But as a fair proportion suffer from unattractive brown [...]

Saturday, March 14th, 200914 March 2009 SLUGS & SNAILS: HERE WE GO AGAIN! I eventually roused myself at twenty to eleven. After all those early mornings it was right to lie-in for a change. First job, after tea (in bed: thank you Mrs Nails) and coffee was up the greenhouse to open door, let some fresh air in [...]
