AUTUMN STARTS HERE?
Someone said that autumn starts today. Certainly here in North Dorset you can feel it whispering in on the morning breeze. Either that or maybe I should be wearing an extra jumper?
It’s been a dry September and so far warm too. Plenty of chiffchaff’s decorating the sunken lanes first thing with their plaintive, repetitive but softly soothing notes. And wasps as well. Funnily enough, despite the lateness of the season, I watched one on the side of Mrs Nails’ shed after breakfast. Scraping away at the wooden surface it was, wrestling the fibres energetically with its jaws. This observation suggests to me that somewhere nearby a nest is still being furnished. This flies in the face of what you’d normally expect for late-September.
