It was incredibly warm today in Shaftesbury. Tee-shirt weather at the end of October. I had to open extra vents in the greenhouse. Gave a drink of water to revive wilting salads in pots. Also took the hoe to a smattering of weeds that peppered bare soil between Brussels sprouts and recently planted winter onions on the plot. Then down the allotment to chop browning, feathery asparagus tops.
The fire I made with a friend who was visiting never got quite hot enough to blitz the cuttings and we stood round a smouldering heap. My tactic of wafting a short length of flat plank at its bottom created enough of a breeze to cause a stir as long as I kept it up. The fire crackled and flamed occasionally but never with a vibrant heart.
When a spell of misty drizzle came in from the south we left the fire to bide as it be, and went on back home for a cup of tea.
