MAKING MONEY FROM COFFEE

The first step in deciding whether to introduce or expand your ‘coffee offer’ is to try to assess the likely level of demand for coffee, then decide how much you are willing (or able) to invest in coffee-making equipment in order to make it profitable for you.

Different types of coffee-making equipment are available to cater for different budgets and levels of demand. Commercial coffee-making machines range from top models at £ 7,000 to more modest units in the £ 300–£ 500 region. You can also lease or hire many types of coffee-making machines too.

Here are ways to make money from coffee:

  • Before investing, learn about coffee-making equipment and the different types of coffee beans and roasts available. (Talk to several suppliers and check the internet.)
  • Choose equipment that is appropriate to the level of demand.
  • Use good quality beans from a reputable supplier.
  • Make sure that you and your staff are properly trained to prepare coffee.
  • Introduce a coffee menu.
  • Introduce a ‘coffee of the week’.
  • Promote coffee with ‘A’ boards, chalkboards and other POS material.
  • Incentivise staff to sell coffee with meals.
  • Offer flavoured and liqueur coffees.
  • Run a coffee ‘collector card’ – eg ‘buy six coffees and get your seventh free’.
  • Offer ‘decaf’ and low fat options.
