MINIMUM WAGE

The minimum wage is a legal right which covers almost all workers above compulsory school-leaving age. There are different minimum wage rates for different groups of workers as follows (rates effective 2007):

  • The main rate for workers aged 22 and over: £ 5.52 an hour.
  • The development rate for 18–21 year olds: £ 4.60 an hour.
  • The development rate for 16–17 years old: £ 3.40 an hour.

Refusing to pay the minimum wage is a criminal offence, with fines of up to £ 5,000. Dismissing an employee when they become eligible for the minimum wage or a higher rate of minimum wage is regarded as unfair dismissal. (Workers do not have to work for a qualifying period for this to be enforceable.)
