The purpose of appraisal
Despite many employees’ suspicions, appraisal is not meant to be a weapon to hold over the heads of the staff! A good appraisal system should be designed to establish the employee’s current situation with regard to skills, knowledge, attitudes and aptitudes and then use this information to work out how to move forwards.
Appraisal should be a motivational tool; it should contribute to job satisfaction and should offer the employee a means of improving themselves and developing higher level, or new, skills.
