How to Grow Veg in a Trash Bag Garden

Share |

Growing Greens Can Be Fun For Everyone!

Even if you only have a porch or patio you can still grow a salad. Get your mum to help you with rounding up what you need and then surprise her with the salad that you grew! Just about any container that can hold soil can grow plants. There really is no trick to making your own garden, all it takes is a very little money and the desire to eat fresh food. All you need to do then is make use of the vertical space that you have available.

You only need enough space for a trash bag with good sunlight - plants,  soil, and water. Then away you grow!

List of things you will need:

  1. Sunlight.
  2. Sturdy trash bag.
  3. String
  4. Soil: Gardening mix works best.
  5. Your choice of plants.
  6. Blunt ended scissors.
  7. Watering can or watering jug.
  8. Empty two liter soda bottle.
Once you have all the things on the list you are ready to start growing a garden. Put the bag where it can get good sunlight. Fill the trash bag with gardening soil and pack it well.

Now poke about six small holes around the bottom of a two litre soda pop bottle, then place it in the top of the trash bag. Bury all but the neck and opening  in the dirt then tie the bag up around the neck of the bottle tightly. Fill the bottle with water. The water will slowly leak out into the soil allowing it to use what it needs. You may have to fill the bottle a few times when you first start in order to get the soil good and damp.

Now you are ready for planting. Cut T shapes into your bag and fold back the two sides. Then poke in the soil with your finger and wiggle out a big enough hole and place the plant into the soil. Cover the roots of the plant with soil bury them up to the bottom two leafs of your plant.

Some plants need more elbow room to grow than others do. So read the instructions on your seed packet for how big your plant will get.

Keep  making T slits all around the bag and placing plants, until you have as many plants as you think will have room to grow.  If you use seeds start them in an egg carton and wait until they are two inches tall before transplanting them to the bag.

You can make  several rows around the bag or stagger the plants for more growing room. Rows can go down the bag too. Mix up the veggies if you wish. One trash bag can hold everything you need to make a great garden salad.

After planting your garden in a bag. Poke a few holes in the bottom of the trash bag for proper drainage.  Remember to keep them small so your soil does not escape.

Now fill the two litre bottle with water for your garden. Any unused water will just drain away. Fill it daily so the plants can have plenty to drink. You will soon have a salad grown by your own hands - and with no need to weed it.

Who knows you might just grow the best vegetables you've ever tasted!

Now get some pals to join with you and everyone grow a garden in a trash bag. If you prefer grow a bouquet of flowers and enjoy.
