How to Switch Your Gas Supplier
If you are looking to switch your gas supplier then the change-over process could not be simpler. If you have not changed your supplier before, there are a few things that you need to know before you make the switch.
Choose your new supplier wisely; gas prices can vary greatly from one supplier to another. Research the prices and special tariffs available with the energy prices you are currently paying. A reputable supplier will adhere to the relevant industry Codes of Practise and will be licensed by the Office of Gas and Electricity Markets (OFGEM). Terms and conditions will also vary, so look a little deeper than just the prices - have a look at any clauses for cancellations just in case you would like to change supplier again in the near future. Or perhaps the gas prices are based on a level of usage, make sure this suits your needs.
Once you have chosen your new supplier you will need to contact them directly to make the necessary arrangements. Whilst it is not actually necessary to inform your current supplier, if you wish to let them know there will be no detrimental effect on the process as a whole. The company you have chosen for the best gas prices will not be the same company that is responsible for the pipelines, emergency service or storage and consequently there will be no interruption to your gas supply during the change-over. On the day of the change-over both the new company and the old company will need a meter reading and it is worth while keeping a note of that reading to be prepared for any possible queries in the future. Some gas suppliers will send a representative to take the meter reading but it is still recommended that you take a record of this reading.
Circumstances will vary with suppliers in your local area but once you have made the decision to switch suppliers to a company that offers you better gas prices, you can confidently expect the process to be completed in four to six weeks. So in just a short space of time you could be saving regularly on your gas prices.
