Are you ready for a puppy?!?!
Whether you want a playful companion, protective guardian or simply a new member of the family have you asked yourself ……….. Am I ready for a puppy?
Whilst a puppy can bring years of joy and companionship they are a long term commitment. Puppies grow, fast, and can live for 15 – 20 years. Do you have the time to commit to your puppy for the rest of its life? Ask yourself the following questions:
Why do I want a puppy?
A family pet, companionship or a guard dog. Do you have any other pets or young children to consider when making your decision? Do you have a supporting family to share the time and energy looking after your puppy will require. Answering these questions will help you determine the breed of dog you should be considering.
Cost?
Owning and caring for your puppy is a large financial responsibility. The cost of your puppy alone could be in the £100s, and then consider food, toys, grooming, vet bills, insurance, collars and leads. Do your research and make sure you are in the correct financial position to buy and care for your puppy.
Time?
Puppies take up a large amount of your time. Training and socialising your puppy will take many patient hours. You will need to spend time patiently teaching your puppy to toilet outside, not to chew, how to behave and interact with other members of the family and other animals, not forgetting daily exercise!!
Habitat?
Where do you live, how much room do you have? These questions need to be asked to ensure you buy the right sized dog. Larger dogs need more room to live in, your puppy may be a small bundle at the start but will soon grow, so always ensure you find out how large your puppy will get. Do you have a garden for your puppy to play in? Is it secure so your puppy can’t escape?
What to expect?
Puppies hate to be alone; they will cry and bark for attention. You will need to clean up mess from your carpets until your puppy is fully house trained. Your puppy may chew your furniture, bite and scratch. Your puppy will shed hair and need brushing and bathing. You will need to worm and flea your puppy to stop infestations. You will need to walk your puppy daily, even when it is cold, raining and windy!!
A puppy is a huge commitment requiring lots of time and love. If you do your research and buy the right breed a puppy can bring you many years of happiness, a loving, warm and cuddly addition to any family.
