Happiness – The Point Of It All
David Lawrence Preston is a hypnotherapist and personal development trainer who has frequently appeared on radio and television. Over the last 20 years he has developed the Dynamic Living Programme, which draws on practical psychological techniques and the sum of all his considerable experience with clients. He is also the author of 365 Steps to Self-confidence.
Happiness consists more in small conveniences or pleasures that occur every day, than in great pieces of good fortune that happen but seldom to a man in the course of his life.
What part does happiness play in your hopes? You’d be a very unusual person if it didn’t feature somewhere. After all, we’re born into the world without really knowing why we’re here and die generally none the wiser – surely we want to enjoy as much as possible of the time in between.
Can happiness be taught? Some psychologists think not – they tell us that some are just born ‘the happy type’. But many believe that happiness can be taught. I’ve seen it for myself. A friend of mine, Alan Davidson, has been teaching happiness for many years around the South of England and the results are dramatic. His students frequently report that their whole lives have been turned around.
Can we set happiness as a goal just like any other and work towards it, just as we would work towards any other goal? Or can we become happy simply by changing our way of thinking? Let’s examine these in detail.
Seven keys to happiness
Dr Usui’s Five Principles
- 1Just for today, I am choosing not to feel anger about things I used to feel angry about.
- 2Just for today, I am choosing not to worry about things I used to worry about.
- 3Just for today, I am going to find satisfaction or enjoyment in more and more of what I do.
- 4Just for today, I am going to work on my own wellbeing and health, learning the skills to allow me to take control.
- 5Just for today, I am going to be kind to others (even if I have to do it through gritted teeth initially!).
(Dr Usui was the reviver of Reiki healing and the founder of the modern system of healing that bears his name.)
Forget about you and all the things you’re going to get out of what you’re doing. Simply go out, head in the direction of your dreams, live your own kind of life, and success will chase after you and arrive in amounts greater than anticipated.
